Formed in 2004 in Sogndal, Norway, Vreid (Old Norwegian for “Wrath”) rose from the ashes of Windir after the tragic loss of Valfar. With a shared resolve to continue forging a path forward, the founding trio of Jarle (bass), Jørn (drums), and Sture (vocals/guitar) were joined by guitarist Ese (guitar), completing the first Vreid lineup and setting forth on a new musical journey. After several years and key early releases, guitarist Stian joined the band, solidifying the long-standing lineup that has driven Vreid’s creative evolution ever since.

From their earliest album Kraft (2004) Vreid embraced their heavy black-metal lineage, yet always with an eye towards evolution. Over the years they have incorporated influences from 1970s rock, 80s heavy metal, and the raw, cold atmospheres of Norwegian extreme metal.
Lyrically and thematically, Vreid have carved their own niche—moving beyond pure myth and folklore to explore the human condition, war, resistance, the rugged landscapes of their home, and the shadows we all navigate.
A relentless live force, Vreid have performed hundreds of shows across more than 25 countries, earning a reputation for high-energy delivery and uncompromising sound. Rooted in the raw essence of Sognametal, yet unafraid to push boundaries, they remain committed to creating music that respects tradition while refusing to be confined by it.

In short: Vreid stand as more than just a continuation of the past—they are a band forging forward into new terrain, carrying their history with them while embracing transformation.
